Reimagining the Vending Machine

OVERVIEW
There is no more iconic drink than Coca-Cola, and the brand was looking to infuse its vending machine experiences with even more Magic. With the integration of Snapchat’s augmented reality technology, we created a physical prototype AR-enabled vending machine at Snap’s Partner Summit (SPS) that works as a portal to AR experiences and rewards. Consumers who engaged with the machine used gesture-based UI to try on AR puffer coats virtually, create unique sounds with Coke Studio instruments, and even vend an actual Coca-Cola product.


THE EXPERIENCE

With the integration of Snapchat’s augmented reality technology, we transformed a Coca-Cola vending machine from a decorative refrigerator into an interactive playground.

We created 3 core AR Experiences:

Vend a Coke: After gesturing to vend a Coke, users can play with the AR elements around them while they wait for their refreshment.

Coke Drop:
Exclusive product that immerses you in the world of Coca-Cola like never before. Try on three selfie-worthy virtual outfits on the Snap Mirror.

Bubble Beats Game:
Surround yourself and a friend in a world of musical bubbles that float and pulse to the rhythm. Create your own jam by swiping and batting the bubbles around and play your finished creation back as an AR performance.

Exterior Wrap: We also had the opportunity to design the exterior of the vending machine.

Design Direction

We worked with the Coca-Cola team to refine and refresh what is an already iconic look and feel by adding elements of Georgian glass, realistic bubbles, and pops of their brand colors into the experience.

The Vending Machine Wrap

When we were asked to design the exterior of the vending machine, we explored many different design directions. Everything from futuristic metallic, reflective exteriors to color-shifting paint was evaluated. Ultimately the client landed on keeping the machine classic red, which allowed for it to be recognized anywhere, and also for the elements on the mirror to really stand out.

The AR Experiences: A Friendly Wave Starts Your Journey

Extending the brand's "Real Magic" claim into the retail experience, a simple wave will wake the machine and immerse the user in the Augmented Reality world of Coca-Cola.
